AirTime
We loved Napster and then Facebook. Now internet brainiac, Sean Parker, introduces his latest online contraption. It’s Airtime, a video chat for facebook.
The real appeal is that you are allowed to connect with facebook strangers based on your interests, and engage in a video chat. Save them to a list and move on to the next. This is all without giving up your actual profile. It’s a real improvement over the traditional chat roulette, but only because it pre-qualifies chatters via Facebook.
My initial trial offered no real excitement. Just bouncing and being bounced from guy to guy. So far half the people on AirTime are dudes in bed… and half of those dudes are asleep with their airtime on. (seriously). Some others include someone in a Facebook t-shirt, and multiple number of tech columnists. The only girl I managed to encounter was—surprise— a tech columnist. Perhaps, it’s only a matter of time before they decide to add genders and age in the mix. But whether you’ll have more luck here than just going out with friends is yet to seem promising.
In theory this is a very cool add-on to Facebook. However, after a few days, it’s no surprise it got off to a disappointing start. It’s going to take some time for users to shed the ick feeling left by previous chat sites; more time to learn online etiquette. And even more time for many of us to update our Facebook interests. My interests say I like lingerie and numbing cream… Actually, those are businesses of 2 of my friends.
After trying this thing out for a bit, The verdict is, we just aren’t ready for it.
